Art knitting copper wire with Sayward Johnson
Do you enjoy playing with metal? Have you ever wanted to experiment with non-traditional materials but not been sure where to begin? In this class, we will cover the basics of knitting with copper wire and create small sculptural pieces. Students will be introduced to the basics of metalsmithing (hammering and shaping), black patinas, heat patinas, and the beautiful blue-green patinas for which copper is so famous. We will also address how to seal our pieces with shellac, varnish and create effects using wax.
Material Fee $18
Core spun wire necklace with Beth Showalter
Using wire, silk and beads each person will spin their own unique core-spun wire yarn that will be twisted and finished into a one-of-a-kind necklace. General directions will be shared and participants will be encouraged to have fun and be creative in this workshop!
Material Fee $15
Viking knitting wire bracelet with Anna Warren
Also known as Trichinopoly chain, Viking knitting dates back to the 9th century. It is the process of bending a continuous length of wire into a series of loops resembling knitting. Participants will be taught the skills and given materials to create a bracelet using this technique.
Material Fee $10
Kumihimo wire bracelet with Mary-Anne Dalkowski
Working with a round kumihimo disk, we will make an 8-slot round braid using coloured beading wire. The braid will be turned into a bracelet or holder for stitch markers made from the leftover wire and decorative beads.
Material Fee $7 + $7 for Disk
Wellington Fibres Mill Tour with Donna Hancock
Wellington Fibres will be hosting a tour of the mill in operation so you can see the process from beginning to end. You will also have an opportunity to visit the goats and look around in the shop as well.
Ducette Braided Scarflace with Roxann Blazetich-Ozols
Participants will learn how to make the square and flat lucet braids using the “No Turn Method” with a dual lucet tool (Ducette®) and yarn for two samples. With this knowledge and a combination of contemporary fibres, especially metallics, and the Ducette®, they will be able to create a scarf/necklace or “scarflace” to wear home. The participants can bring their own lucet (or Ducette®) or they will be provided with an “in house” Ducette® to use in class. This workshop will include instructions for two braiding techniques normally taught in separate classes. For those with previous lucet braiding experience, they will have an opportunity to use both square and flat lucet braiding together to make a truly unique wearable art piece.
Material Fee $20
